CRH Ventures invests in EnviCore to advance new sources of supplementary cementitious materials
CRH Ventures has announced a strategic investment in EnviCore, a Canadian company developing high-performance supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) for the construction industry.
EnviCore has developed a proprietary thermo-chemical process that can convert a diverse range of mineral resources and industrial by-products including clays, natural pozzolans, recycled concrete and glass, industrial by-products, and mine tailings into high-performance SCMs.
The technology has been evaluated across multiple feedstocks, creating opportunities to transform lower-value materials into valuable resources for the construction industry. Designed to activate locally sourced minerals, EnviCore's process can integrate with existing cement production infrastructure to support more sustainable cementitious materials; an increasingly important capability as availability of traditional SCMs, such as fly ash and slag, becomes more constrained in some regions.
From accelerator participant to strategic partner
CRH’s relationship with EnviCore began through the CRH Ventures Sustainable Building Materials Accelerator, a program designed to identify commercially relevant technologies with the potential to lower emissions, enhance material performance, or increase the use of waste feedstocks in building materials.
EnviCore was named one of the program’s winners. Since then, teams across CRH continue to work with EnviCore to evaluate its technology using a range of feedstocks, building a strong technical foundation for this next stage of collaboration.
Murari Perumalsamy, Head of CRH Ventures said: “EnviCore has developed a compelling technology with the potential to create high-performing supplementary cementitious materials from a broad range of locally available resources. Our teams have built a strong technical relationship with Envicore through the Sustainable Building Materials Accelerator. This investment allows us to deepen that collaboration, build further evidence and explore how the technology could support CRH’s cementitious materials strategy.”
Building evidence and a pathway to scale
The investment will support EnviCore in building its first-of-a-kind (FOAK) facility, with a planned production capacity of 200,000 tonnes per year, as it advances its technology and prepares for commercial-scale production. As part of the broader partnership, CRH and EnviCore will continue working together to evaluate the technology and explore its potential across a range of materials reflecting CRH Ventures' approach of testing and building evidence alongside our portfolio companies before pursuing wider deployment.
Shahrukh Shamim, CEO and Co-Founder of Envicore said: “Our work with CRH has allowed us to test EnviCore’s technology with a diverse range of real-world materials and benefit from deep technical and operational expertise. This investment marks an important next step in our relationship and will support us as we continue to develop, validate and scale our technology.”
About EnviCore
Envicore was founded in 2019 as a spinout from the University of Calgary. The company develops technologies that convert mineral resources and industrial by-products into supplementary cementitious materials. Its focus includes supporting the decarbonization of cement production and transforming industrial waste into higher-value resources.
