CRH Ventures announces strategic investment in Sublime Systems

CRH Ventures is delighted to confirm a strategic investment partnership with Sublime Systems, the pioneering U.S. based company in the field of sustainable cement production. This partnership marks a significant step forward in our commitment to advancing decarbonization within the construction industry.

Sublime Systems is at the forefront of developing an innovative electrochemical, ambient temperature approach to cement production. This technology aims to replace traditional kiln processes and achieve less than 100 kg of CO2 emissions per ton of cement at a commercial scale. By utilizing primarily basalt feedstocks, along with calcium-rich minerals, slags, and kiln dust, Sublime Systems produces pozzolanic cement and supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), while generating only a small volume of coproducts.

Head of CRH Ventures Eduardo Gomez said "Our investment in Sublime Systems aligns seamlessly with the focus we’re placing on decarbonizing construction. Sublime Systems’ approach to cement production has the potential to significantly reduce CO2 emissions, offering a differentiated solution in the market. The recent grant from the U.S. Department of Energy's OCED program, underscores the promise of their technology."

The partnership will provide CRH with priority site selection rights for full-scale plant development in key markets, as well as material offtake from Sublime Systems' demo-scale plant for testing and market-building initiatives.

Sublime Systems is currently engaged in front-end loading (FEL) engineering for a 30,000 tpa demo-scale project to achieve Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 7, a significant milestone in its development path.
